Change Management Models, Theories, and Methods

Description: ADKAR Change Management Model

ADKAR is a goal-driven change management model that focuses on individual transitions during the change process. The model is responsive to the fact that individual needs differ within organizations. ADKAR change management model comprises five steps that must be understood for successful adoption in a change within the organizations. The steps include awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement (Bejinariu et al., 2017). The model involves creating awareness within an institution about the need for change. Additionally, the ADKAR model entails generating a desire among stakeholders to participate in the change process. Other activities within the model are knowledge creation on what is needed within a change process, ability development in terms of skills to empower stakeholders to execute change, and reinforcement to create mechanisms to sustain change. Reason for Selection

The ADKAR change management model is vital within the project because regardless of project type, each participating individual has needs. That said, the ADKAR model is individual-focused meaning that it recognizes the special needs unique to each person. In support, Bejinariu et al. (2017) argue that addressing individual needs makes it easy for project managers to create awareness, motivate participants, offer information, develop skills, and sustain change using various strategies. ADKAR model is selected because it recognizes the role of active engagement and support for the realization of successful models.

Peer Response

ADKAR model applies to most if not all projects because projects need teams comprising many people. All individuals in a change process need to understand a change by gathering information on how to implement change. Additionally, participants need some motivation such as the one embedded in the ADKAR model to champion successful change models. Another change management model applicable to change processes is Lewin’s change management model which comprises three steps, namely unfreezing, change, and refreezing (Šuc et al., 2009). While Lewin’s model focuses on the actual project and needed change, ADKAR emphasizes individual needs meaning that the two models can be used together.
