Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS)

Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems is a compilation of surveys that probe patients to report on their healthcare experiences (Garge, Balakrishna & Datta, 2018). This set of surveys are accessible and free to every user interested. The main focus is on the elements of healthcare quality that are deemed vital and well-equipped by patients to assess, as the ease of access to care and treatment and the caregivers’ communication skills. Various CAHPS surveys are available, but this research paper will focus on the Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care Environment.

Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care Environment

Globally, patient experiences are being followed up for the main purpose of securing the information on delivery and quality of care provided to them. Such patient experiences are simply a reflection of the occurrences during the care process and thereby give information on the caregivers’ performance. This activity makes part of a systematic survey program with a set of quality indicators for patient experiences referred to as the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) (Suliman & Aljezawi, 2018). The CAHPS is the standard measure that provides information on the actual experiences and the quality of action that is regarded as significant by patients.

Various institutions have performed a series of studies to analyze what is considered by patients as essential in healthcare. For this reason, a survey conducted by the Picker Institute Europe came up generally with eight quality views considered by patients as they seek care (Copanitsanou, Fotos & Brokalaki, 2017). A Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care Environment should consider the patients’ inclusion in decision making and respect for patients’ preferences. There is a need to consider transparent and comprehensive information in self-care support while also putting a stressful action to offer respect, empathy, and emotional support. Professional nursing practice refers to the commitment to caring, compassion, and strong ethical values/practices. It may also encompass continuous development of self and others. Those who are committed to nursing are able to discharge their duties knowing that it is their main responsibility. In most cases, nurses are expected to adhere to the standards of professional practices to ensure quality healthcare outcomes. In other words, high level of professionalism is essential in healthcare practices to ensure effective patient outcomes. Also, ensuring high level of professionalism leads to a strong interprofessional collaboration and an effective work environment where everyone to realize their potential. Nursing, as a profession, has got unifying ethos, while assessing the patients, nurses do not only consider the test results. The profession involves critical thinking that is often demonstrated in the nursing process. In most cases, nurses apply their judgment to incorporate subjective data with objective data. Today, nurses are required to adhere to the evidence-based practices to ensure that they discharge their duties in line with the required standards. In the nursing schools, nurses are trained on critical thinking which enables them discharge their duties with high level of critical thinking.

Additionally, a Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care Environment ensures quick access to reliable health advice, effective diagnosis, and treatment (Aiken et al., 2017). There is a need to offer attention to environmental vs. physical conditions, including family caregivers, efficient transitions, and continuity of care. These quality aspects are often reflected in questionnaire templates involving monitoring patient experiences which are the CAHPS. Besides, the patient experiences are indicators used to evaluate and improve quality of care, majorly internal care improvements. Normally, experienced nurses have different technical abilities to give effective care and enhance the quality of treatment process. With long period of their involvement in the nursing practices, they are able to recognize different factors that ought to be incorporated in the general care process to enhance quality patient outcomes. Nurses have significant roles to play especially when it comes to the protection of patients and effective management of general healthcare setting.

Nevertheless, nurses are considered to spend the most time with patients as they seek care, affecting the larger part of patient experiences on care. The nursing working environment is regarded as the major determinant of Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care, and positive patient nursing care experiences define a healthy and preferable nursing work environment (Garge, Balakrishna & Datta, 2018). A healthy and conducive work environment is a work context where nurses can achieve organizational goals and obtain personal satisfaction with the services offered. A Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care Environment provides a climate that gives challenges in clinical knowledge and skills.

Considerably, nurses working in such environments are likely to provide excellent nursing care to patients. According to Copanitsanou, Fotos & Brokalaki (2017), research that Kramer and Schmalenberg presented ascertained eight essential aspects that define the Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care Environment. Adequate staffing levels, autonomous nursing practice, clinically component nurses, an approach that values patient concerns, nurse manager assistance, support for education, and control over nursing practice are crucial to the provision of high-end nursing care. There is an existing relationship between patient experiences of the quality of care and the Comfortable and Therapeutic Patient Care Environment; however, it is not clear how this relationship comes about. Maintaining appropriate staffing levels requires the intervention of the management through the development of an elaborate staffing matrix that can be used to assign different roles to various healthcare staff. Staffing matrix often ensures that the staff identified are fit to undertake different roles assigned to them.
