Management versus Leadership

There are many differences that exist between the leadership and management. Leaders set direction and goals; they usually challenge the norm while finding new ways of working towards the set goals. On the other hand, managers usually maintain the status quo; they focus on the conformance to the standards. They are also involved in the management of individuals and teams and they organize control and direct to achieve the set goals (Daft 122). Although sometimes it is easy to differentiate between the Management versus Leadership, it is sometimes complex many individuals are both. The managers usually have the unfortunate paradox of managing systems, standards, and resources. They always need to ensure that everything works as per the set plans and that everything must remain in order. Managers also have to lead teams towards achieving unchartered boundaries and new mechanism of working.

Based on the theories of leadership, dictating through an autocratic management systems cannot win the minds and hearts of many individuals. The above scenario will in turn create more damages than good in the long run. Therefore, leadership plays essential roles in motivating and leading different teams to achieve new things. Management usually focuses on the tasks and work. These activities often within the subject of resource i.e. time, money, equipment, and human. Including:

Planning and Budgeting: The management is usually involved in the planning tasks and resources to achieve the set objectives. The objectives may include increasing profits and operational process (Hill 179). Budgeting is another task that is carried out by the management; it involved managing the budget constraints in different departments and or projects. Proper budgeting is essential for every organization or business institution; it enables an institution to work within their financial might without recoding wastage of funds. Organizational design is another task carried out by the management; this involves organizing work processes and ensuring that specific works are done at specific time interval. Organizational design also involves setting different department for specific tasks. In every business organization, controlling and organizing the staff is an essential process that can lead to the increase in profits. The above situation involves organizing resources and support functions aimed at managing the resources and staff. Controlling standards is another essential process carried out by the management; it involves delivering appropriate required by the customers, it also involves delivering objectives as dictated by the customer’s demands. During my time as an agribusiness manager, I recoded losses due to lack of proper planning and budgeting; I did not get it right that it is the responsibility of the mangers to control planning and budgeting. I could have invested more time and resources in planning and budgeting as it is an essential role of any management in any business venture. differences between managing and leading in the context of project management.

Building strong relationship and bringing orders from chaos: While leadership involve the creation of talents and creativity among the workers, management strongly advocate for bringing orders and building strong relationships among the workers (Daft 134). The aim of every business is to integrate the workers towards achieving common goals; therefore having a committed workforce free from orders and chaos and with a strong sense or relationship can promptly create a good corporate culture. Institutions characterized by chaos are bound to fail, a situation that can greatly undermines the objectives of achieving the set objectives. The strong relationships can only be built through directing and coordinating projects tasks as well as achieving goals as a collective responsibility. Most managers advocate for workers integration rather than quality because they believe that through collaboration, a company is able to achieve long term goals. differences between managing and leading in the context of project management.

Developing procedures and processes: procedures, processes, and operational standards elaborate how a business should operate (Van Wart 121). For instance, hospitality or a retail business may want to place a process in place in order to achieve maximum sales, create essential procedures for the staff that are usually involved in the closing and opening of business on a daily basis, or set a policies and standards for the staff and customer services. All the above issues are managerial operations that should be distinguished from the leadership roles. It is the responsibility of the managers to ensure that the processes and procedures are working and that employees are following every step in order to achieve set objectives. Developing standards, processes, and procedures is essential especially during the early stages of the business development or when the management is trying to rebuild or grow a business venture that is underperforming. The business processes and procedures are important in providing training to the staff as well as in the induction programs and formal processes like reviewing staff performance.

Tracking productivity is another managerial role that is distinct from the leadership role. The advancement in technology and the persuasiveness of the web has enabled many businesses to track productivity in different organizational departments (Van Wart 96). The management can apply the technology to measure different performance of various departments. With the rise of social media and Smartphones, managers are able to blend personal life and work life. The leadership styles of different organizations do not concentrate on tracking productivity but rather improving them in order to ensure maximum profits. In the above case, both the leaders and managers play significant roles in the business organization and therefore, their roles should be preserved.

Promoting imagination and creativity as well as winning hearts and minds: most managers as well as leaders invest more time in promoting innovative ideas among the employees. Creativity and imagination are the mechanism for converting knowledge into insights, successful implementation, and valuable ideas (Van Wart 111). Through promoting creativity, one is able to see the potential rather than the problems. Also, an individual is able to recognize the reasons to act rather than the reason not to act. Consequently, achieving the set objectives depend on the above cognitive capabilities. In the organizational set up, creativity comes from the individuals who apply innovative thinking and imagination to solve complex problems. Design thinking and application of creativity in problem solving are some of the attributes that managers look for in their employees in order to promote personal creative skills. During my time as an agribusiness manager, the workers started working like robots without incorporating new ideas and as a result, I could have promoted creativity and imagination towards the work processes, and this could have won the hearts and minds of many workers towards work performance.

Inspiring employees, creating vision and direction is also another role of management that leads to an organized work environment. Most managers usually provide incentives to the workers in order to encourage them to achieve the set objectives. As a manger in the agribusiness venture, inspiring employees is vital (Daft 109). At a certain point in my business, I experienced loss of motivation from the workers, situation that I could have solved through giving incentives and creation of vision and direction to the workers.
