A primary source is an original document of first-hand recollection of an event created as the event occurs or by a person directly involved in the event. On the other hand, secondary sources interpret or analyze primary sources. Moreover, secondary sources are prepared after an event often by individuals not directly involved with the events. Examples of secondary sources are books and commentaries. Finally, tertiary sources give a compilation of data from primary and secondary sources, for example, encyclopedias. Overall, primary sources give a direct link to events, secondary sources analyze the first-hand account offered by primary sources, and tertiary sources consolidate information from primary and secondary sources.

The source Bartolomé de Las Casas Describes the Exploitation of Indigenous People, 1542 is a primary source. The article features a first-hand record by Bartolomé de Las Casas explaining the oppressions suffered by indigenous people in 1542.
